In the wake of numerous issues at the Salina Animal Shelter, City Commissioners on Monday will consider moving forward with privatizing the shelter’s duties to an outside organization.
According to the City, only one business responded to the request, Prairie Paws Animal Shelter Inc. submitted a proposal. The company already manages shelters in Manhattan, Emporia and Ottawa.
Their plan involves using their Manhattan facility to support the Salina shelter, at a net cost of over $800,000. If an agreement is reached, Prairie Paws could take full control of Salina Animal Services by January 1, 2027.
