KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an incident Tuesday that left a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer with a broken hand and a man hospitalized with multiple stab wounds.
According to the KBI, the incident followed a traffic stop just after midnight Sept. 29, when a suspect allegedly fled in a black Buick Regal and ran over an officer’s foot.
Around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, officers located the vehicle in a business parking lot in the 2900 block of State Avenue. The KBI said officers activated a marked patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and ordered the driver to exit. The man, identified as Roberto Pineda, 47, of Kansas City, Kansas, got out and ran, prompting two officers to pursue him.
The KBI’s preliminary investigation indicates a physical struggle began when officers caught up with Pineda. During the struggle, Pineda allegedly grabbed an officer’s firearm on his gun belt and attempted to gain control of it. The officer used a knife to stab Pineda multiple times, while the second officer struck him with a baton, according to the KBI.
After Pineda released the firearm, officers handcuffed him and provided medical aid. Pineda and the officer whose hand was broken were taken to KU Medical Center. The officer was treated and released, while Pineda remained in stable condition and was expected to survive.
Pineda was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer in connection with the early morning traffic stop. Additional charges are expected in connection with the afternoon incident.
KCKPD requested KBI assistance around 5:10 p.m. Tuesday. The KBI emphasized that its information is preliminary and does not represent final findings. Once the independent investigation is complete, findings will be submitted to the Wyandotte County District Attorney.
