Columbia, Missouri – The McPherson Bulldogs Volleyball team extended their win streak to 13 games with wins over Columbia College and Crowley’s Ridge College at the Columbia Quad on Saturday.
Game One: McPherson College vs Columbia College
Score: MC 3, CC 1
The Bulldogs started off the day against host Columbia College. The Cougars got out to a quick start, scoring the first four points of the set and racing out to an 8-3 lead. McPherson scored four straight points to tie things up at 9-9, but Columbia would slowly pull away for a 25-19 win. McPherson would come out stronger in the second set, slowly building their lead throughout the set despite some back-and-forth. When the Bulldogs had set point with a 24-18 lead, the Cougars rallied for five straight points, but McPherson held on for a 25-23 win.
The third set remained close, with McPherson and Columbia trading points before the Bulldogs would close out the set with seven straight points for a 25-16 victory. The fourth set also started with a back-and-forth battle before McPherson rallied from behind with a seven-point run once again to take a 12-7 advantage. The Bulldogs would go on to win their third straight set 25-17 to take the victory.
Enya Fierens and Miriam Maino led the Bulldogs on offense with 13 kills apiece while Lily Gray had nine. Roxana Varela Parra recorded 22 assists with Tabor Scanlon right behind with 21. Defensively, Fierens, Havana Olander and Kaylee Stegora each had three blocks while Isabella Calle racked up 21 digs. McPherson out-hit Columbia .268 to .189.
Game Two: McPherson College vs Crowley’s Ridge College
Score: MC 3, CRC 0
McPherson’s second matchup of the day was with Crowley’s Ridge, which was the first meeting between the two teams in program history. The first set remained evenly matched throughout, but the Bulldogs closed it out with a 9-1 run to win 25-17. The second set had both teams trading scoring runs, but McPherson would pull away once again to take a 25-16 win. The third set was the same story, with both teams each going on long scoring runs before the Bulldogs would take control for a 25-21 victory.
Fierens led the Bulldogs offensively once again with 14 kills, followed by Havana Olander with 10 and Tori Buss with eight. Tabor Scanlon picked up 21 assists to lead McPherson. On defense, Calle had 23 digs for the Bulldogs. McPherson hit .286 in the match while the Pioneers had a .102 hitting percentage.
