McPHERSON, Kan. – The McPherson boys soccer team got two first half goals that proved to be enough in a 2-1 win over rival Buhler on Tuesday night.
Buhler earned a penalty kick early after a handball in the box was called on McPherson. The Crusaders took advantage and took a 1-0 lead on the penalty. Goalkeeper Hunter Schroeder was able to hold the Crusaders out of the goal the rest of the night, adding a save in the win.
McPherson tied the game when Yahir Valadez capitalized on a turnover and hit a shot into the top corner for a goal. Momentum moved to McPherson’s side and shortly after the first goal, Grayson Broadus scored off of a corner kick to deliver what was the eventual game winner with a scoreless second half. Fouls and yellow cards disrupted the flow as McPherson was able to grind out the victory.
“Neither team created many clear opportunities, but the biggest moment came when a Buhler player was shown a red card after a dangerous slide tackle on our goalkeeper,” said coach Chris Adrian. “From there, the boys did a good job of seeing out the game and securing another wild victory.”
Adrian added: “These are the types of games that teach us a lot, and hopefully we can use those lessons as we continue to get better.”
Also on Tuesday night, the McPherson JV squad played to a 0-0 draw with Buhler.
McPherson moved to 5-2 overall and will be back at home hosting Newton on Thursday night at 6:30.
