JOPLIN, Mo. — The Hesston College cross country team competed against a large field of runners from across the region Saturday at the Southern Stampede, hosted by Missouri Southern State University at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course. The meet featured a women’s 5K and men’s 8K.

Sophomore Arissa Cathey represented the Larks in the women’s 5K, finishing 228th overall in 23:33.4. Cathey averaged 7:34.9 per mile in a field that included more than 200 runners from NCAA, NAIA and junior college programs.

On the men’s side, sophomore Jonah Krumme once again led Hesston, completing the 8K course in 27:20.34 to finish 123rd overall. Krumme averaged approximately 5:30 per mile and was the first Lark across the finish line.

Sophomore Nathan Lewis followed in 168th place with a time of 28:23.69, averaging 5:42.7 per mile. Junior Sebastian Pavlovich rounded out Hesston’s finishers, crossing in 32:47.45 to place 271st. Freshman Jose Chaman was entered in the race but did not record a finishing time.

With only three recorded finishers, Hesston did not post a men’s team score. Cathey was Hesston’s lone women’s finisher, so the Larks also did not record a women’s team score. The meet featured a deep field, with more than 300 runners entered in the men’s 8K and more than 200 in the women’s 5K.

The Larks will return to action Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Muthama-Rogers XC Invitational in North Newton, Kan.
