KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Hesston College volleyball team put together a perfect day at the Spurgeon College Triangular on Saturday, sweeping both Emmaus University and host Spurgeon College. The two victories improved the Larks to 7-5 on the season.
Hesston 3, Emmaus 0
The Larks opened the day with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 sweep of Emmaus. Hesston hit .308 for the match, recording 50 kills against just 14 attack errors while holding Emmaus to 24 kills and a .093 hitting percentage.
Hesston was efficient throughout the match, hitting .293 in the opening set before producing 20 kills and a .366 hitting percentage in the second. The Larks closed the sweep with 14 kills in the third set.
Jaycee Ray led the attack with 13 kills on 23 attempts, hitting .478 while adding four block assists. Lydia Foster finished with 11 kills and hit .500, while Kennedie Esparza added nine kills. Delayna Kerry and Trinity Griffin each contributed seven kills and hit .375.
Kerry also recorded 22 assists and 14 digs, while Rebekah Blackmer added 19 assists and three service aces. Sarahi Paez led the defense with 17 digs, Bethanie Haag added 10 and the Larks finished with nine service aces.
Hesston 3, Spurgeon 0
Hesston followed with another straight-set victory against host Spurgeon, winning 25-18, 25-14, 26-24. The Larks finished with 41 kills and a .220 hitting percentage while holding Spurgeon to 30 kills and a .109 percentage.
After taking the opening set, Hesston turned in its strongest offensive performance in the second, recording 13 kills with only three errors to hit .370 in a convincing 25-14 win. Spurgeon challenged the Larks in the third, but Hesston held on for a 26-24 victory to complete its second sweep of the day.
Ray and Foster led Hesston with nine kills apiece, with Ray hitting .381 and adding two solo blocks and three block assists. Layla Romero added seven kills on 14 attempts for a .429 hitting percentage, while Kerry and Esparza each finished with six kills.
Kerry and Blackmer each handed out 15 assists, while Paez led the Larks with 12 digs. Kerry, Paez and Blackmer each recorded three service aces as Hesston finished with 11 aces in the match.
The Larks will return to action Friday, Sept. 25 when they host Calvary University at 6 p.m.
