A reversal of roles produced a familiar result Saturday afternoon as the Barton Community College women’s soccer team overcame an early two-goal deficit to battle Coffeyville Community College to a 2-2 draw at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The result marks the second 2-2 draw between the two squads this season, moving the Cougars to 1-3-6 in conference play and 3-3-7 overall while Coffeyville goes to 2-5-3 in league action and 6-5-3 on the year. Sitting tied for fourth in the Jayhawk Conference standings, Barton returns home Wednesday for a pivotal 3:00 p.m. matchup against fifth-place Dodge City Community College, which sits just one point back in the standings.
Unlike the first meeting, the Cougars found themselves on the opposite side of an early 2-0 advantage as the Red Ravens wasted little time jumping in front. Coffeyville opened the scoring in the sixth minute as a 35-yard free kick bounced through the box before finding a Red Raven player at the back post for an uncontested tap-in. The hosts doubled their advantage in the 27th minute when a corner kick bounced around the box before deflecting off a Coffeyville player’s shoulder and into the net.
Barton began chipping away at the deficit in the 43rd minute as Maki Kimura‘s long-range attempt deflected off the outstretched hands of the Red Raven netminder, finding Ella Swift unmarked for the easy tap-in and her team-leading seventh goal of the season, cutting Coffeyville’s advantage to 2-1 with just 2:52 remaining before halftime.
Riding momentum into the second half, Barton began applying pressure offensively, generating 11 shots over the final 45 minutes after producing just four in the opening period. The pressure ultimately paid off in the 65th minute as Ana Clara Paltanin delivered the eventual equalizer, bending her corner kick directly inside the far post for her second goal of the season to pull Barton even at 2-2.
The 2-2 deadlock held over the final 25 minutes as neither side found the go-ahead tally, leaving the two squads with identical results in both regular-season meetings.
By the Numbers
Barton finished with 15 shots, placing 10 on frame, while generating six corner kicks, all coming in the second half. Clara Paltanin paced the Cougar attack with three shots, while Ayaka Nagano, Ana Luiza Gori, Mikka Kolle and Kimura each contributed two attempts. Luiza Gori and Kimura each placed both of their shots on frame, while Lucie Gillig recorded five saves over 90 minutes between the pipes.
