A familiar script produced a different ending, Saturday afternoon as the Barton Community College women’s soccer team saw an early two-goal advantage slip away in a 5-3 road loss to Hutchinson Community College at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

The loss drops Barton to 2-3-6 overall and 0-3-5 in Jayhawk Conference play while Hutchinson improves to 6-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in league action. The Cougars return to the Cougar Soccer Complex Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. conference matchup against Garden City Community College.

Barton struck first in the 14th minute as Maki Kimura found the back of the net for her third goal of the season, putting away a loose ball the Blue Dragons cleared just outside the 18-yard box to give the Cougars 1-0 advantage.

The advantage doubled just 5:39 later as Lilly Brooke-Cousins‘ long ball found Ella Swift, who put away her fifth goal of the season to stake Barton to a 2-0 lead at the 19:09 mark.

Hutchinson began chipping away at the deficit in the 27th minute as Olivia Tamaki cut the margin in half, launching a 25-yard strike into the far upper 90 off an Ariadna Zwenger setup. The Blue Dragons drew even late in the half on Montunrayo Ojobare’s thigh-high volley with 2:01 remaining before Zwenger connected off a corner kick with just 12 seconds left to send Barton into the break trailing 3-2.

Barton responded out of the break, finding the equalizer in the 58th minute as Mikka Kolle‘s ball through the middle slipped behind the Hutchinson backline, finding Ana Luiza Gori for a converted one-on-one opportunity and her team leading sixth goal of the season to draw the Cougars even at 3-3.

The deadlock held for nearly 18 minutes before Hutchinson delivered the decisive blow with a pair of goals just 25 seconds apart. Ojobare struck for her second of the afternoon at the 75:13 mark before Tamaki connected with Isabell Van Fleet just 25 seconds later, quacking turning the 3-3 tie into a 5-3 Blue Dragon advantage.
