Severe Storms, Tornadoes impact SE Kansas Sunday

Severe storms impacted many areas in southeast Kansas late Sunday afternoon and into the evening. There were two rounds of storms, the first late in the afternoon that moved from central Kansas produced winds reported as high as 80 miles an hour northeast of Yates Center and hail up to two inches in diameter in parts of Anderson, Coffey, Allen and Woodson counties.

There was a window broke by hail about five miles northwest of Iola, but only pea-sized hail was reported in Iola proper.

The second round of storms developed in Elk and Chautauqua counties and moved east,producing a tornado that cause considerable damage in Sycamore,.along with baseball sized hail reported near Cherryvale and additional tornado reports in Labette County.

Later as the storms moved into Cherokee County it produced a large tornado near Columbus that prompted meteorologists at KOAM to take shelter, as the path of the storm was very close to the station along US 60 North of Crestline.
