Fire crews responded Friday to a fire on the Osage Cuestas hiking trail northeast of Fredonia, where a bridge near the trailhead was heavily damaged by flames.
The Fredonia Fire Department and Wilson County Rural Fire Department responded to the blaze, which occurred on a bridge between Fillmore and U.S. 400.
When firefighters arrived, they found the bridge heavily engulfed in flames. Crews were able to bring the fire under control, but the structure sustained extensive damage.
The bridge was originally built by volunteers as part of the Rails-to-Trails project.
The cause of the fire was not provided.
