GARDEN CITY – Sophomores Isabell Van Fleet and Poppy Smith both tied career highs for points in a single game and the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team put together its most complete game of the season on Saturday.
Led by the 10 combined points from Van Fleet and Smith, the Blue Dragons scored a season-high goal total in a 5-0 Jayhawk Conference victory over Garden City at Broncbuster Stadium.
The Blue Dragons improve to 4-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the KJCCC heading into Wednesday’s home conference match against Coffeyville at the Salthawk Soccer Complex. Garden City is 6-5-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the league.
Van Fleet extended her goal-scoring streak to three consecutive games, scoring four goals over that span. Van Fleet had two goals and one assist against Garden City, which tied her single-game career highs for goals and points. Van Fleet has scored 10 points in her last three games. This was her third career multi-goal game.
Smith matched Van Fleet with two goals and an assist against Garden City. This was her third career multi-goal game. She has also scored goals in three consecutive games.
Sophomore Olivia Tamaki had two assists.
Montunrayo Ojobare scored her first goal of the season in the second half. Ariadna Zwenger and Lucy Bacon both had assists in the game.
Freshman goalkeeper Hanna Helshani (3-4-1) earned her second career shutout with one save.
The Blue Dragons outshot Garden City 15-4, putting a season-high 11 shots on goal against the Busters.
The Blue Dragons played long passes into the offensive end to set up all five goals against Garden City.
The Dragons led just 1-0 at halftime when Van Fleet look a long pass from Tamaki and then used her speed to get into scoring position, lacing a 15-yard left-footed laser for a goal with 27:44 to play in the opening half.
The Dragons needed just 30 seconds to score in the second half. Bacon sent a long pass to Smith, who split a pair of Garden defenders to get a one-on-one chance at the keeper and scored with 44:30 to play in the half.
Hutchinson scored its other three goals in the final 16:48 of the second half.
Van Fleet scored with 16:48 to play with an assist from Smith. Then Zwenger set up Smith for her second goal of the game with 8:15 to go. Finally, Ojobare scored with 7:51 to play on Tamaki’s second assist of the game.
The Blue Dragons are now 35-1-1 all-time against Garden City with 26 of those wins by shutout.
