The Blue Dragon defense pitched a third-straight shutout and the Hutchinson Community College football team knocked off the No. 1 team in the nation for the for the third time in program history on Saturday.
In the fifth meeting as the top two teams in the NJCAA Division I Football Rankings, the No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons defeated No. 1 Iowa Western 26-0 at Gowans Stadium.
The Blue Dragons start a season 5-0 for the fifth consecutive season and it’s the sixth-straight regular-season win over the Reivers. Hutchinson travels to play at Highland next Saturday. Iowa Western is now 3-1 and will play host to Garden City next Saturday.
Saturday’s shutout was historical for the Blue Dragons:
+ The Blue Dragons posted their first shutout in series history against Iowa Western;
+ The team’s third-straight shutout this season – Garden City 70-0, Butler 24-0 and Iowa Western 26-0 – is the first time the Blue Dragons have posted three-straight shutouts since 1950;
+ This is only the third time in program history with three-straight shutouts – 1936, 1950 and 2026;
+ The 2026 Blue Dragons have not allowed a single point in 14-consecutive quarters and have not allowed a touchdown in 18-straight quarters.
Led by linebacker Jack Sells‘ career-high 12 tackles and defensive back Jawon Springs‘ nine tackles, the Blue Dragons forced three takeaways and held Iowa Western on downs three times. The Reivers had a season-low 276 yards. Iowa Western had only four possessions that entered Hutchinson territory with two trips to the red zone. Both of those drives ended on downs.
Offensively, the Blue Dragons had 307 total yards. Hutchinson threw for 273 yards, but rushed for a season-low 34 yards. The Dragons had no turnovers for the fourth time this season.
Quarterback Randy Phillips completed 17 of 31 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Blue Dragons.
Sophomore receiver Nakai Poole had career highs of five receptions, 128 yards and a 73-yard touchdown reception. Jeremiah Looney had five catches for 84 yards.
JB Price had a team-high 34 yards on 15 carries. Quarterback Bravin Powell had Hutchinson’s only rushing touchdown.
Special teams also had a big impact for the Blue Dragons. Freshman kicker Parker Grizzell was 2 for 4 on field goals with successful field goals of 49 and 42 cards. Punter Denzel More averaged 44.7 yards per punt on six punts with a long of 69 yards. Return specialist Aiden Bruce averaged 20.5 yards per return on four returns, including a 50-yard punt return late in the first half. DyVair McCray had a 37-yard kickoff return.
The Blue Dragons took a 7-0 lead on their second possession of the game. The Dragons marched 67 yards in eight plays. The drive was capped off by an 8-yard Phillips-to-Devin Voltaire touchdown reception in the right corner of the end zone. The score was set up by Looney’s 39-yard reception three plays earlier.
Hutchinson had a rough offensive second quarter getting held to no offensive yards or first downs. Iowa Western had one sustained drive in the second quarter that went to the Blue Dragon 19, but Sells’ tackle on fourth-and-2 held the Reivers on downs to stall that drive. The Dragon defense forced a Reiver punt late in the quarter and Bruce turned than into a 50-yard return – Bruce’s second-longest return of the season – to the Reiver 32 with 5 seconds remaining. Grizzell then kicked a 49-yards field goal on the final play of the first half for a 10-0 Blue Dragon lead.
Grizzell added a 42-yard field goal with 11:01 to play in the third quarter for a 13-0 Hutchinson lead. The Dragons later took possession at their own 27 with 3:27 to play. On the first play of the series, Phillips went deep to Poole and completed a 73-yard catch and run for a touchdown. The Dragons missed on the two-point conversion and led 19-0 with 3:16 to go in the quarter.
After a quiet offensive second quarter, the Dragons had 159 yards in the third quarter.
The Blue Dragons got the ball back on a Marcus Dawson interception at the Hutchinson late in the third quarter. The Dragons marched 54 yards in eight points and took a 26-0 lead when Powell’s quarterback sneak reached the end zone.
GAME NOTES – The last time the Blue Dragons shut out three-straight opponents in 1950 – the Dragons blanked Pratt (48-0), Tonkawa (55-0) and Trinidad State (33-0). … In 1936, the Dragons posted four-straight shutouts: Chilocco (7-0), Dodge City (7-0), Parsons (6-0) and Iola (14-0). … The Blue Dragons are now 8-6 all-time against Iowa Western, 4-2 at Gowans Stadium. … Blue Dragon head coach Drew Dallas is now 31-5 all-time against nationally ranked teams. … Dallas won his 65th game in his seventh season on the Blue Dragon sideline.
