Sophomore Isabell Van Fleet had a three-point game and sophomore Poppy Smith netted her fifth career game-winning goal as the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team got its first shutout of the season on Wednesday.
The Blue Dragons snapped a two-game losing streak in a 2-0 victory over the Dodge City Conquistadors at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.
Hutchinson (3-4-1, 2-2-1 KJCCC) extended its winning streak over Dodge City to 35 consecutive games. The Dragons lead the all-time series with the Conquistadors at 36-1. The Dragon posted their 25th shutout of Dodge City, winning the last three games against the Conquistadors by shutout.
Van Fleet had her first multi-point game of the season and third of her career with a goal and an assist to lead the Blue Dragons. Smith had her second game-wining goal and fifth of her career, scoring her third goa of the season. Montunray Ojobare had an assist.
The Blue Dragons outshot Dodge City 19-13, including 9-4 in shots on goal.
Hutchinson freshman goalkeeper Hanna Helshani earned her first career shutout, making four saves.
After a scoreless first half, it took just 23 seconds into the second half to get the Blue Dragons on the board.
Van Fleet intercepted a Dodge City clearing attempt around midfield and then fed Smith with a pin-point pass. Smith blew past two defenders moving to her left and ripped a shot from about 15 yards out with her left foot to score with 44:37 to play in the second half.
The Dragons made it 2-0 in a strong counter to a Dodge City advance. Ojobare got the ball away from a Dodge City players and fed Van Fleet, who pulled away from two Conquistador defenders and juked past the Dodge City keeper for an empty-net goal and a 2-0 lead with 23:52 to play in the game.
Helshani made all four of her saves in the second half.
The Blue Dragons play at Garden City on Saturday.
