GODDARD, Kan. – The McPherson girls tennis team traveled to Goddard for a makeup competition on Saturday. In all, they came away with three individual first place finishes and a second place finish to take the team title with 11 points ahead of the host Goddard in second with 8.
The #1 Doubles team of Avery Unruh and Quinn Liebl had another great day, finishing 3-0 and taking first place. Their toughest match of the day came against Goddard in which they were forced into a tiebreaker after leading 6-3. Unruh and Liebl responded, winning the tiebreak for the gold.
McKenna Paul cruised to a 3-0 finish in #2 Singles and Dragon Rodriguez and Lleyton Kuhn did the same in #2 Doubles to finish in first place. The only loss of the day for the Bullpups came in #1 Singles. Mayson Wiens had a tough match against her opponent from Goddard, but she ended up winning her other two matches for a second place finish.
“Win or lose, those are exactly the types of matches we need right now,” said Tyler Brown of the tough competition from Goddard. “It’s good for our #1 singles and doubles to be put in situations that don’t just test them physically, but test how they respond mentally to the pressure and emotions of a tight match.”
McPherson is back with a quick turnaround today as they are competing in the AVCTL Division III & IV Tournament in Wichita, which was also postponed from last week. It is the final tournament before postseason play begins at the end of this week.
