There is no shortage of superlatives to describe the job Landon Martinez has done for Buhler this season. The Crusader running back has been explosive, powerful, efficient and steady.
Last night, however, for the Wellington defense, he was a problem.
42 carries … Problem.
246 yards … Problem.
6 touchdowns … Problem.
Wellington had no answer for the junior running back. Buhler’s effective ground game produced long, sustained drives that kept the Wellington defense on the field. The Crusaders ran 65 offensive plays compared to Wellington’s 41.
Buhler head coach Steve Warner adjusted in the second half, using a two-tight-end formation for much of the remaining game. The extra blockers paved the way for an unrelenting ground attack.
After the game, Warner described the performance as a return to “Buhler football.”
Buhler (4-2) returns home next week to host Winfield (3-3) at Crusader Stadium. The Vikings are coming off a 48-0 loss to Rose Hill.
