HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Summer travel season is underway increasing traffic on Kansas roadways. The Hutchinson Police Department Traffic Unit reminds the public to recognize speeding as an aggressive driving behavior and to slow down.

The Hutchinson Police Department joins law enforcement across the country to remind drivers that Speeding Catches Up With You and you can expect to see increased law enforcement presence on local roads during the nationwide safety campaign, which runs from July 7-15.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeders don’t just put themselves in danger, they put other road users including passengers, pedestrians and bicyclists at risk as well. Drivers have a shared responsibility to keep themselves and others safe. Obeying the legal speed limit and driving at a reasonable speed for road conditions is part of that responsibility.

Not following posted speed limits is not only against the law, it creates serious risks for everyone on the road. The consequences are far-reaching and can include:

  • Greater potential for loss of vehicle control
  • Reduced effectiveness of occupant protection equipment
  • Increased stopping distance after a driver perceives a hazard
  • Significant economic costs associated with speed-related crashes
  • Increased fuel consumption and higher travel costs
