HUTCHINSON, Kan. – One thing sweeter than helping a neighbor in need is when you can eat a donut thanks to Daylight Donuts. On Third Thursday May 21 at 6PM, The Salvation Army will be hosting its 5th Annual Donut Eating Contest located in front of Grasshopper Park at the corner of Avenue A and Main St. There are three awards up for grabs: Eating the most donuts in 5 minutes, the People’s Choice Award for the most online donations, and the Raising the Most Dough Award for the most donations during the event.

Contestants will be eating as many glazed Daylight Donuts in 5 minutes to help raise money for The Salvation Army’s efforts to send kids to camp. This event is also in honor of The Salvation Army’s National Donut Day which takes place each year on the first Friday of June. This longtime celebration is in honor to the women (Donut Lassies) who volunteered to go to the frontlines in WWI to serve coffee, donuts and to pray with the men fighting. Amazingly, Major DJ James’ great grandmother was one of the Donut Lassies sent by The Salvation Army who served donuts during the war.
The Salvation Army sends kids to their regional camp in the KC area for just $20/child. “Having worked at the camp as a teen and young adult, it’s amazing to see children have the opportunity to have the camping experience”, says Major James. This isn’t just a great opportunity for children, but it’s an affordable way for families to plan something special during the summer months when many summer options are out of financial reach.
At threetrailscamp.org you can sign-up children for camps for children ages 7-17 to The Salvation Army’s regional camp. Camps consist of Kid’s Camp, Teen Camp, Sports Camp, and Music Camp. Camp cost is $20 per child while using the discount code: HN2026.
Come out to the event and support The Salvation Army, or go to salarmy.us/hutchinsondonutday and select one of the competitors at the bottom of the page to sponsor. Or, you can go to the link on the Hutchinson Salvation Army Facebook page. However, it’ll taste even better if you come and enjoy a free donut that will be handed out during the event.
Please call Major James at 620-663-3353 with any questions on how to donate or be a competitor.
