Kansans are still waiting to see who will lead the state – and head to Cedar Crest in January.

State Senate President Ty Masterson, an Andover Republican, and State Sen. Cindy Holscher, a Democrat from Overland Park, are locked in a close race.

Unofficial results Wednesday morning showed Holscher leading with 546,648 votes (50.3%) to Masterson’s 541,070 votes (49.7%).

The difference was just 5,578 votes, with approximately 97.9% of the vote counted.

Holscher has declared victory, but Masterson has not conceded, saying the narrow margin deserves another look.

Election officials must complete the remaining ballot reviews before the results are certified. Until then, the final outcome remains uncertain.
