RENO COUNTY, Kan. – In the November 3, 2026 general election, Democrat Jason Probst reclaimed the Kansas House of Representatives District 102 seat by defeating Republican incumbent Kyler Sweely. Unofficial election results show Probst securing 3,033 votes to Sweely’s 2,681 votes.

Probst originally took office in 2017 following the passing of Rep. Patsy Terrell and subsequently won election to a full term in 2018. He served until November 2024, when he lost the seat to Sweely by a narrow 294-vote margin. During the 2024 campaign, Sweely’s candidacy faced objections from local voters who challenged his listed address in Hutchinson, though he remained on the ballot.

The term following the 2024 election was marked by several public controversies between the two figures:

  • Prior to the 2024 election, video footage from 2023 surfaced showing Sweely in a Wichita apartment; Wichita police investigated the matter, and the individual involved stated she did not consider herself a victim of a crime.
  • In February 2025, during a traditional House floor hazing ritual for freshman legislators, Rep. Patrick Penn and Rep. Sweely referenced military firing command terminology targeting “that guy from Hutch”—a reference to Probst. House Democrats denounced the exchange as inappropriate rhetoric, while Probst publicly dismissed the comments.
  • In August 2025, Sweely submitted a letter to Gov. Laura Kelly requesting Probst’s removal from the Kansas State Fair Board, alleging inappropriate and homophobic remarks at a fairgrounds event. Probst denied the allegations, characterizing them as a gross exaggeration and a political deflection.

With the 2026 election results, District 102 will return to Democratic representation as local and state election officials prepare for standard post-election audits and canvassing.
