PARSONS, Kan. — Parsons police are investigating a shooting early Sunday, Nov. 1, that left a juvenile with a minor injury after multiple rounds were fired into an occupied apartment at the Mendota Creek Apartment complex.

Officers responded around 1:56 a.m. to the complex in the 1400 block of South 25th Street. Police said several rounds penetrated an exterior door and damaged the apartment, where several people, including juveniles and young children, were inside.

The injured juvenile was transported to Labette Health for evaluation. Authorities said the injury was reportedly caused by debris rather than a bullet and was not life-threatening. No other injuries were reported.

Officers secured the scene and recovered multiple spent cartridge casings and other evidence. Preliminary findings suggest the shooting may have stemmed from an earlier altercation at another location in Parsons.

Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident involving people connected to that dispute. Authorities said there was no information indicating an ongoing or widespread threat to the public.

Police Chief Robert Spinks called firing into an occupied residence “an extremely reckless and dangerous act,” expressing particular concern that children were inside.

The investigation remains active. Police are withholding the identities of the juvenile, witnesses and individuals being investigated to protect their privacy and the investigation.
