HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Monday June 29, 2026
At 10:37am the Hutchinson Fire Department was called to 18 West B street for a smell of gas. As units responded to the area, multiple other citizens called in a smell of gas throughout the town. Crews searched the area for the source and found it located in the Midwest Scrap yard at Bigger St. and Adams St. Crews located a container of gas odorant. This is the rotten egg smell that is injected into natural gas before it is used.
There is no emergency as this is an odor only. There is no gas leak. Thank you to everyone who called in the smell of gas. This is exactly what the community should do when you smell an odor such as this.
