The Big Kansas Road Trip is coming to Humboldt Saturday. It’s sponsored by the Kansas Sampler Foundation as part of their Kansas Explorers Club and is one of a series of pop-up events held in primarily rural communities around Kansas.
“It’s an opportunity for Kansas explorers and friends to visit communities in Kansas that are doing neat things,” said Monica Frye, who coordinates BKRT. The event has its roots in the Kansas Sampler Festival, which for many years was held on the rural McPherson County farm of Marci Penner, founder of the foundation.
For the Humboldt pop-up, events will get underway Friday with a music crawl Friday afternoon and evening, there’s also racing Friday night at Humboldt Speedway, and Audubon of Kansas will have a nature walk Friday evening at 7 and again Saturday morning at 8 at Neosho River Park on the west edge of Humboldt.
Activities connected with the road trip actually start on Friday
On Saturday there will be a variety of events, with the festival officially opening at 10 AM on the Humboldt Town Square. During the day there will be multiple behind the scenes tours at many locations along with eating and shopping in the community.
Frye told us this road trip is significant as it’s the first one since Penner stepped down from administrative duties in January. Even so, she will be in Humboldt on Saturday.
