Salina City Commissioners will meet Monday to approve an agreement with Prairie Paws Animal Shelter.

The move will transfer the operations and management of the Salina Animal Shelter to Prairie Paws in December. The one-year $462,000 deal has renewal options for the next two years

The city decided to seek an outside partner last year after facing ongoing staffing challenges at the shelter. Over the past year, public discussion accelerated in Salina for change after the shelter failed a Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) inspection in January, regarding euthanasia procedures by staff.

Prairie Paws, based in Ottawa, Kansas, already runs a municipal shelter and has experience working with city governments.
