IOLA — Allen Community College music students performed vocal and instrumental selections during the college’s Fall Midterm Recital Wednesday evening in the ACC Theatre.
The recital featured students studying under music instructors Kathryn Whalen and Patrick Matarazzo, along with the Allen Community College Concert Choir. It also marked a milestone for the college, which is offering vocal music instruction and ensemble opportunities for the first time this year.
The program included classical, contemporary and musical theater selections. Vocal students performed works from Carousel, My Fair Lady and La La Land, while instrumentalists presented compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Arcangelo Corelli, Richard Strauss and others. Treca Jackson and Audrey Powe provided piano accompaniment.
The concert choir, directed by Whalen, closed the evening with selections including “Saturday Sunshine,” “That’s What Friends Are For” and “Feelin’ Groovy.”
“This recital showcased not only the talent of our students, but also the growth of music opportunities at Allen,” Matarazzo said. “The addition of vocal music this year has expanded the program, and our students continue to embrace every opportunity to perform and develop their craft.”
The expanded program offers students private lessons, choir participation and public performances to help develop their musical skills and confidence.
