Salina city staff members will be hammering out a contract to transition the Salina Animal Shelter over to Prairie Paws Animal Shelter of Manhattan, after City Commissioners on Monday used a 5-0 vote to approve the measure.
The one-year $462,000 deal has renewal options for the next two years with language to be agreed upon in the coming weeks.
Brandon Sokol, Director of the Prairie Paws facility in Manhattan spoke at the meeting and said their timeline for the takeover is eight weeks. Animal control within the city limits will likely be under the purview of the Salina Police Department.
Over the past year, public discussion accelerated in Salina for change after the shelter failed a Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) inspection in January, regarding euthanasia procedures by staff, that according to the state, were not properly documented. Two staff members are also facing charges related to the treatment of some of the animals.
