HUTCHINSON, Kan. – On September 22nd, 2026, at approximately 8:48 P.M., a male, later identified as Jesse Taylor, age 49 of Hutchinson, approached an officer who was inside a stationary patrol vehicle in the parking lot at 1403 East 11th Ave.
Mr. Taylor had visible blood on him, told the officer he had a firearm, and then displayed the firearm to the officer. When the officer gave him commands, Mr. Taylor ran toward the Porter Commons Apartments, 1415 Katie Drive, with the firearm. The officer pursued him on foot as a second officer arrived in the area.
The second officer located Mr. Taylor in the apartment complex parking lot. When he started giving him verbal commands, Mr. Taylor fired a handgun at the officer, striking an unoccupied vehicle nearby. The officer immediately moved to cover, and Mr. Taylor retreated from the area. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Taylor was located unarmed and taken into custody. Officers located a firearm and a knife in the immediate vicinity where Mr. Taylor was taken into custody. No officers or civilians were injured.
Officers executed a search warrant at Mr. Taylor’s residence. During the search, officers located a deceased canine inside the residence. The canine had sustained lacerations and apparent gunshot wounds.
On September 22nd, 2026, Mr. Taylor was arrested for Attempted Capital Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer (x2), Felony Interference, Cruelty to Animals; Malicious Killing, Criminal Damage, and Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm.
