HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 113th Kansas State Fair, a time-honored tradition celebrating Kansas agriculture, is now officially underway in Hutchinson following opening ceremonies on Friday at the Heartland Credit Union Pavilion.
The ceremonies began with the presentation of colors by the Kansas Highway Patrol and a rendition of the National Anthem performed by the Hutchinson High School Jazz Band. Fair Ambassador Richard Shank drew attention to the large American flag flying patriotically over the Heartland Credit Union Pavilion, courtesy of the Hutchinson Fire Department.
Reflecting on the event’s deep historical roots, Shank reminded attendees, “113 years ago this week, a group of hearty pioneers met near this spot to open the first official Kansas State Fair.” He also touched upon the solemnity of September 11th, recalling how in 2001, Governor Bill Graves met with the fair board and declared that the state fair would continue.
Community leaders shared their enthusiasm for the annual gathering. Hutchinson Mayor Scott Meggers welcomed fairgoers, highlighting the community pride and economic benefits the event brings to the city. Jeremy Stauffacher of Heartland Credit Union noted, “The tradition allows families, friends, neighbors, and visitors to come together and celebrate what makes Kansas special.”
Kansas State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz extended his gratitude to the staff, volunteers, and partners whose hard work makes the fair possible. Looking ahead at the schedule, Kansas State Fair Board President Holly Lofton remarked, “For the next ten days, the fairgrounds will come alive with livestock shows, 4-H and FFA competitions, agriculture, and fine arts exhibits, carnival rides, live entertainment, family activities, and some of the best fair food anywhere.”
The opening ceremonies concluded with the Hutchinson High School Jazz Band performing “Home on the Range.”
