McPherson Firefighters responded to a house fire Wednesday afternoon in the 500 block of West Avenue A.
Two engines and a total of eight personnel responded to the initial call at 3:50 PM, with first arriving units reporting a moderate amount of smoke coming from the eaves on the west side of the first floor of the two story residence. One crew located the fire in an attic space over the portion of the first floor that didn’t have the second above it.
Another crew tried to make entry by ladder from the roof, and during that one firefighter partly fell through the roof, but was able to self-extricate with help from the inside crew, after which he was evaluated by EMS and returned to duty.
The fire was brought under control in a short period and fire damage contained to the room of origin. Due to extreme heat, an additional crew was brought in to allow rotation through shorter work periods.
Cause of the fire is under investigation, but foul play is not suspected.
