For the second year in a row a student at Eisenhower Elementary School in McPherson has won the Kansas Arbor Day Poster Contest. 5th Grader Isabel Perry was honored during Tuesday’s McPherson City Commission meeting as it adopted the annual Arbor Day proclamation.
Each year the city asks local 5th graders to participate in the contest which aims to teach the importance of trees, with teacher provided lesson plans with an abundance of information about trees and their role in the ecosystem.
Isabel’s poster was selected as the local winner by members of the McPherson Tree and Park Boards, after which is was sent to the District Forester. Last year, Hadley Fischer from Eisenhower won the state contest.
The City will host a tree planting celebration Friday morning at 11 at Shelter House 5 in Lakeside Park, which is Arbor Day locally as proclaimed by the Commission.
