The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) has approved a $12 million natural gas rate increase for Atmos Energy to recover costs already incurred by the company for safety and reliability projects.

The rate hike, which takes effect Sunday, will mean an approximately 6.81 percent increase for the average residential customer, or about $5.69 a month. This includes an increase in the fixed customer monthly charge.

The company had originally sought a $19 million rate increase, but the lower amount was agreed to following negotiations with staff, the Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board, and other involved entities.

Atmos provides service to 140,000 customers spread across the state.

In central Kansas Atmos serves much of Marion County including the cities of Hillsboro, Marion and Peabody.
