Hutchinson Fire Department Provides Update on Early Morning Fire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At 3:30 am, the Hutchinson Fire Department received a call for a possible structure fire at 56th street and Old K-61 in Hutchinson. Crews arrived on scene to find heavy fire showing from a structure that appeared to have been burning for a while.  A defensive fire attack was started along with rural water operations.  The fire was considered controlled at approx. 4:15 a.m.

Crews remained on scene for multiple hours working on hot spots.  56th Street will be closed until approx. noon today.  Crews will be on scene working throughout the morning.

Fire investigation will start at daybreak.  No firefighter injuries were reported.

UPDATE:

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -(December 15, 2025 – 2:45 p.m.) -As stated earlier, HFD responded to 56th street this morning at 3:30 am for a structure fire.  When crews arrived on scene, they found a small 700 sq ft home that that was fully involved with roof collapse.  Crews performed a defensive attack calling the fire controlled at 4:15 am.  During firefighting operations, it was determined that there was potential of an occupant still in the home.  After extinguishment and removal of roof materials and debris, the occupant was found deceased.

Investigation of the fire showed that the fire may have started at approx. 1:00 am.  A neighbors camera system showed a glow in the area at that time.  The fire went unnoticed for approx. 2.5 hours before HFD was notified.  Due to the prolonged burn time and the destruction of the home and contents, the fire is ruled as undetermined.
