ALLEN COUNTY, Kan. — Allen County Commissioners Tuesday approved an $85,683 expenditure for a 1.5-inch overlay on 1150 Road from US 169 to the Neosho County line. This road has been closed to through traffic due to a bridge replacement project in Neosho County, where 1150th becomes Elk Road.

Neosho County Commissioner Gail Klassen, who was at the meeting, told her Allen County counterparts that bridge is currently expected to reopen by the end of the month, and they are also planning an overlay on Elk Road from the Bridge into Chanute.

Road and Bridge Supervisor Jeremy Hopkins, who noted the cost for this work is higher than another recent project on 1400 Road North of Iola due to asphalt having to be hauled in from a further distance, said he’s waiting on a quote for overlay work in the Petrolia area.

Thrive Allen County’s Marcia Davis gave Allen County Commissioners a report Tuesday on last week’s Community Conversation in Savonburg. Davis outlined the three top priorities identified from that meeting, including infrastructure, particularly as it relates to streets, sewer and cell phone service, along with community involvement and communication.

While Savonburg has fiber internet available, cell service has long been a problem in that area as it is in nearby Elsmore. On the subject of roads, Davis said the Savonburg City Council Monday discussed that issue and will be working with Public Works Director Jeremy Hopkins on that.

Commissioners are expected to take action next week on two equipment purchases. At Tuesday’s meeting Public Works Director Mitch Garner presented a quote for purchase of a new noxious weed truck. Only one bid was received from four vendors who were contacted. A separate bid for the back-end unit on the truck will be brought at a later date.

Commissioners were also presented information from Road and Bridge Supervisor Jeremy Hopkins regarding the roller he reported last week will likely need to replace due to unavailability of parts to repair it. Two options were provided, one for a unit similar to what they have now and another for a slightly larger and newer roller that would have a better warranty on it.

A resolution for Domestic Violence Awareness month presented by Hope Unlimited was also adopted.
