IOLA, Kan. — Allen Community College has named Kathryn Whalen its new vocal music instructor, bringing a background in vocal performance, teaching and directing to the college’s music program.

Whalen, 26, comes to Allen from Hays and holds a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from Fort Hays State University and a master’s degree in vocal performance from the University of Northern Colorado. She previously taught K-12 vocal music at Thomas More Prep, where she directed the TMP Pop Singers and the school’s production of “The Music Man.”

Whalen said one of her priorities at Allen will be promoting vocal health and wellness while helping students develop consistency and confidence as singers. She currently has seven students in choir and seven more taking voice instruction, with plans to grow the program and eventually add another ensemble.

Whalen also plans to visit area high schools to build relationships with music directors and introduce prospective students to Allen’s vocal music program.

Her first public performance as Allen’s vocal music director will be Oct. 14 at the ACC fish pond. The concert will feature music by songwriter Burt Bacharach, including “Saturday Sunshine” and “That’s What Friends Are For.”
