ALLEN COUNTY, Kan. — Humboldt City Administrator Cole Herder told Allen County Commissioners Tuesday they were pleased with the chip seal work county crews recently completed. This year’s work involved four streets in the city, and they are able to hit all streets in the community on a ten-year cycle. The city covers the cost of the road oil and half of the expense of the chips, with the county covering labor and the other half of the chip cost.

On the subject of roads, Road and Bridge supervisor Jeremy Hopkins told Commissioners he is holding off continuation of work on 600 Road due to continued rainfall but is hopeful they are able to resume work by next week. Issues with some intersections in the western part of the county were also discussed.

Commissioners accepted a $19,480 bid from LSC Environmental Services for cover material at the Landfill. This is a specialized material that incorporates a fire-retardant material. Public Works Director Mitch Garner said only one bid was received for the material out of two solicited, and the only bid received was usually the low bid.

Garner also reported the landfill backhoe was brought back Monday from Foley Tractor in Chanute after a rebuild, which allows for extension of the usable life of a piece of equipment at a considerable cost savings over new equipment.

The Commission signed application forms for an Emergency Management Permanency Grant from the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. Director Jason Trego said this is an annual grant, which for the coming year would amount to around $23,000. Funding is based on a combination of population and demographics.

Interim County Appraiser Danielle Louk discussed purchase of tablet computers for her office approved earlier, and said she’s looking at options, to which Commissioner John Brocker provided a suggestion on a potential source.

Zoning Administrator Terry Call also reported a position on the Planning Board has come open due to a resignation for health reasons.
