HUTCHINSON, Kan. (September 5, 2025) – As a light rain sprinkled the Kansas State Fairgrounds this morning, the Kansas State Fair Board met to prepare for the day ahead. Spirits were high in the morning’s meeting as the Board welcomed special guests Dave Johnson- EMS Director, and Kevin Irwin- 911 Director, to speak about their operations at the fair this year. Johnson briefed the board on EMS operation, including roving units and staffing of the first aid station. Irwin emphasized the importance of collaboration between each emergency response unit, stating that 911 dispatchers will be on scene throughout the fair. He reminded the group that 911 is the number to call in case of emergency, at which point dispatchers will be able to coordinate the appropriate response.
Board President John Leslie then welcomed Lieutenant Dave Golden of the Kansas Highway Patrol with a quote from Bob Dole, “Ok, but it would’ve been better had they served some donuts”. Golden responded, “We refer to those as power rings”. The mood was light as Lt, Golden gave a security briefing for Day 1, mentioning that they will watch the weather today for potential lightning. On Thursday evening the KHP made one DUI arrest, and Golden stated that they are ready for the fair, and have proactive troopers on site.
The board did not have much to cover this morning. They are keeping an eye on the weather, with the National Weather Service predicting light rain until 6:00 this evening. The Opening Ceremony will take place at 11:00 at the People’s Bank and Trust Arena, so come out to enjoy the fair!
