LINDSBORG, Kan. — The Bethany College volleyball team earned a straight-set victory over Calvary University on Thursday, defeating the Warriors 25-15, 25-16, 25-15.
Bethany established control early in the opening set. After building a 16-9 advantage, the Swedes continued to create separation behind their attack and pressure from the service line. Bethany pushed its lead to 22-13 before Kailyn Jefferson closed the set with a kill to secure the 25-15 win.
The Swedes carried the momentum into the second set. With Bethany leading 15-11, Josie McLean recorded three consecutive kills as part of a run that extended the advantage to 18-11. Antonette Carochi followed with a service ace, and Ashlynn Gehring later helped Bethany reach set point before Jefferson finished the frame with a kill for a 25-16 victory.
Calvary stayed close early in the third set, taking a 5-4 advantage before Bethany responded. The Swedes moved in front 8-5 behind kills from McLean, Gehring and Graci Hanson along with a McLean service ace. Bethany later stretched the lead to 15-8 following a Hanson ace and continued to control the set from there.
Jefferson delivered two late kills to give the Swedes a 24-15 advantage before a Calvary attack error ended the match, 25-15, completing the three-set sweep.
Gehring led Bethany offensively with 11 kills while adding 20 digs and two service aces. McLean finished with eight kills, 14 assists, 15 digs and two aces, while Jefferson added eight kills. Carochi contributed seven kills on a team-best .316 hitting percentage.
Kylee Harris directed the offense with a team-high 19 assists and added nine digs, while Keylian Gomez Quiles recorded 16 digs and six assists. Anna Voit chipped in 11 digs as Bethany totaled 75 digs and eight service aces in the victory.
