Fort Hays State University is racing to raise $1 million to keep the Sternberg Museum of Natural History open past December 18.
President Tisa Mason shared the update with Ellis County commissioners after announcing the museum would close to the public if funding falls short. A group of faculty and staff is working on a long-term funding plan. They estimate that the museum will need around $1 million in new annual revenue to stay open in future years.
The university faces a $2.4 million cut in state support and currently spends about $850,000 each year to run the museum.
