DA Says Initial Evidence Not Enough to Hold Driver in Tragic Soccer Field Incident

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office says it’s not unusual for charging decisions to take time after a fatal crash.

A truck struck a soccer field at Wichita’s Stryker Sports Complex on October 17, killing six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer of McPherson. Prosecutors say they’re reviewing evidence, and similar cases averaged nearly 80 days before reaching a charging decision.

The investigation covers toxicology reports and a mechanical check of the vehicle to rule out malfunctions or other factors. The driver, a 34-year-old woman, was released from custody.

The DA explained that initial evidence did not provide the probable cause needed to hold her any longer under Kansas law.
