Plans have been finalized for the 25th annual Coffey County O.K. Kids event, with a free weekend of outdoor activities, food, games, prizes and family fun planned for Sept. 11-13 at John Redmond Reservoir.

Saturday’s activities begin with the O.K. Kids Fun Run at 7:30 a.m., followed by a pancake breakfast and the annual fishing tournament at New Strawn Lake from 9 to 11 a.m. The catch-and-release tournament is open to children, with those under age 9 required to be accompanied by an adult.

Families can also take part in a wide variety of activities from 1 to 4:30 p.m., including canoeing, archery, paintball, inflatables, pedal cars, face painting, tie-dye T-shirts, a rock wall, military obstacle course and firefighter obstacle course. Other activities include a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service outreach trailer, slingshot target shooting, crafts, games and a science demonstration.

The day will also include a free lunch, snow cones, a free barbecue supper and a 9/11 memorial ceremony honoring victims and first responders. The evening will conclude with a 25th anniversary fireworks show at 8:15 p.m., with fireworks launched from the top of the dam road.

The weekend wraps up Sunday morning with a free breakfast for campers and participants. Organizers encourage families to attend and celebrate 25 years of Coffey County O.K. Kids, an Outdoor Kansas for Kids program designed to give children hands-on opportunities to experience and appreciate the outdoors.
