IOLA, Kan. (Dec. 15, 2025) — Allen Community College has received $58,351.30 through the Kansas Department of Commerce’s Registered Apprenticeship Grant Project to expand workforce training and create new apprenticeship opportunities. The funding will support development of a building maintenance and plumbing apprenticeship program in partnership with local companies, reinforcing Allen’s commitment to meeting regional workforce needs.

The grant was part of a statewide announcement by Governor Laura Kelly, who highlighted more than $1 million invested across Kansas to grow registered apprenticeship programs. Allen was recognized among a select group of awardees for its leadership in workforce and apprenticeship development.

“Thanks to this award, Allen will be better positioned to prepare students for high-demand careers while strengthening local industry,” said College President Lyvier Leffler. “With an apprenticeship program, students can earn money while learning, get tuition covered, gain hands-on skills, earn industry-recognized credentials, and secure a strong career path with high demand and better wages.”

The Memorandum of Understanding for the project was executed Dec. 1, 2025, and Allen will have one year to complete all grant activities. The initiative aligns with Kansas’ efforts to expand high-wage, high-demand apprenticeship programs statewide.

Allen Community College provides quality educational and support services in an atmosphere that is caring, safe, and conducive to learning.
