Hutchinson CC Sports Information
The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team held an opponent to less than .100 hitting for the seventh time this season on Saturday in a Jayhawk Conference sweep of the Butler Grizzlies at the Sports Arena.
Hutchinson won its fourth match in its last five outings with a 25-14, 25-21, 25-22 victory over the Grizzlies.
The Blue Dragons are now 12-8 overall and 4-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons play host to the Pratt Beavers at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Arena. Butler is now 6-8 overall and 1-4 in the KJCCC.
The Blue Dragons outhit Butler .193-.070 on Saturday, which is a season low by a conference opponent against Hutchinson. The Dragons held Butler to negative-.132 in the first set and just .176 in the second set and .167 in the third set.
Freshman outside hitter Giovanna Monteiro led all hitters with 14 kills, hitting .379 on 29 total attacks. She posted her 12th double-double with 11 digs and she added two service aces.
Freshman Julia Macedo had nine kills, hitting .077 on 26 attacks. Sophomore Lauren Vasquez had five kills. Sophomore Mattie Galliher had three kills and four total blocks.
Freshman setter Klaudia Bilinksa had 30 assists, two kills, two blocks and three digs.
Sophomore libero Clara Oliveira had 13 digs and moved into No. 10 on the Hutchinson career digs list with 854 career digs.
The Blue Dragons had six service aces to Butler’s one. Monteiro and Arianna Delgado had two aces each. Butler out-blocked the Blue Dragons 8-6. The Dragons out-dug Butler 39-36.
Claire Buss had 12 kills to lead Butler.
SET 1: The Blue Dragons jumped out quick to a 9-2 lead after a Vasquez kill. Another Vasquez kill and Butler attack error boosted the lead to 13-4. The Blue Dragons’ largest lead of the set was 14 at 21-7. Vasquez and Monteiro had four kills each in the set. The Dragons added four kills and two ace serves in the set.
SET 2: There were 12 lead changes and eight ties in a wild second set. Butler led 12-9, but the Dragons answered with a Monteiro kill, Delgado ace and Bilinksa kill for a 5-0 run and a 14-12 lead. Trailing 18-17, Monteiro’s kill tied the set. Her ace a few rallies later gave the Dragons a 21-18 lead. Leading 23-21, the Blue Dragons benefitted from a pair of Butler errors to win the second set 25-21 for a 2-0 match lead. Macedo and Monteiro had four kills each as Hutchinson hit .200 in the set.
SET 3: Butler scored the first five points of the third set prompting an early Hutchinson timeout. The Blue Dragons tied the set at 8-8 after a Monteiro kill. Tied at 10-all, a Butler attack error gave the Blue Dragons the lead for good. The Dragons led 19-14 after a successful coaches’ challenge, but the Grizzlies rallied to pull within 22-21. Macedo’s kill stopped that run and the Dragons capped their sixth sweep of the season with a Galliher kill. The Dragons hit .222 in the final set.
