EL DORADO – The Hutchinson Community College football team posted its second-straight Jayhawk Conference shutout of the season in a NJCAA nationally ranked matchup on Saturday.
The No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons held No. 12 Butler to 114 total yards as Hutchinson defeated Butler 24-0 at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.
The Blue Dragons are now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the KJCCC. Hutchinson steps out of conference play for a matchup against No. 1 Iowa Western at Noon on Saturday at Gowans Stadium. Butler is now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the KJCCC.
Over the last two games, the Blue Dragons shut out Garden City 70-0 last week and blanked the Grizzlies on Saturday. That’s the first time Hutchinson posted back-to-back Jayhawk Conference shutouts since 1982 when Hutchinson defeated Dodge City 26-0 and Garden City 42-0.
The Blue Dragons held Butler to seven first downs, 48 passing yards and 66 rushing yards. The deepest drive into Hutchinson territory by the Grizzlies was the Blue Dragon 37 yards line.
The Dragons had three quarterback sacks from Jack Sells, Michael Harris and LaDarius Jemes. The only Blue Dragon takeaway was a Jawon Springs‘ interception.
Milleon McKinzie, Sells and Ira Warren had six tackles each to lead the Dragons.
This was Hutchinson’s first shutout of the Grizzlies since 1964.
Offensively, the Blue Dragons had 426 total yards against Butler, hitting 172 rushing yards and 254 passing yards.
Quarterback Randy Phillips completed 15 of 25 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns.
Phillips found sophomore receiver Jeremiah Looney for a career-best 116 receiving yards on four catches, including a 79-yard touchdown catch. Sophomore Karlan Ransom had four catches for 99 yards and a touchdown.
Running back Jayden Hall led the Dragons with 81 rushing yards on 17 carries. JB Price rushed 14 times for 67 yards and a touchdown. Price also had three receptions for 24 yards.
Freshman placekicker Parker Grizzell broke a Blue Dragon record with a 54-yard field goal in the first quarter. The old record was 52 yards by Alejandro de la Poza, which was kicked in last year’s national championship game.
The Blue Dragons got out to a fast start with 17 points in the first quarter.
After a three-and-out by the Blue Dragon defense to start the game, the Dragons immediately marched 70 yards in six plays, taking a 7-0 lead on a Price 5-yard touchdown run with 10:29 to play in the opening quarter.
The Dragons made it 10-0 after Grizzell’s school-record 54-yard field goal with 6:16 to play in the period.
Hutchinson made it 17-0 on the final play of the first quarter when Phillips hooked up with Looney for a 79-yard touchdown strike – the longest play from scrimmage this season by the Blue Dragons.
The score remained 17-0 until 1:56 to play in the third quarter when Ransom hauled in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Phillips. The scoring drive was seven plays covering 85 yards.
GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons extended their true road-game record to 27 games and won at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex for the fifth-straight time. … The last time the Blue Dragon defense posted back-to-back shutouts was 2024 when the Blue Dragons shut out Ellsworth 99-0 and Dodge City 47-0. … Blue Dragon head coach Drew Dallas is now 30-5 against nationally ranked opponents. … The Blue Dragons are now 52-50-1 all-time against Butler. … Parker Grizzell‘s 54-yard school-record field goal was the third 50-plus yard field goal in team history. … The Blue Dragons have not allowed a point in the first quarter in 14-straight games. … Jeremiah Looney is the second Blue Dragon receiver this season with a 100-yard receiving game, joining Bobby Shaw III. … Jawon Springs had his first career interception.
