The Sterling High School football team, the defending Class 1A state champions, maintained its grip on the No. 1 spot in Class 1A in the latest Kansas Football Coaches Association poll released on Wednesday.
The Black Bears (5-0) are followed by Smith Center, Thomas More Prep-Marian, Rossville and Inman. Sterling hosts Ellinwood on Friday, TMP hosts Republic County and Inman plays at Remington.
In Class 2A, Garden Plain and Haven are ranked fourth and fifth. The top three spots belong to Silver Lake, Sabetha and Council Grove. Haven plays at Larned Friday night and Garden Plain hosts Marion.
In Class 3A, Andale, Cheney and Hesston are ranked first, second and third, followed by Holcomb and Wellsville. Friday night, Andale hosts Wichita Trinity Academy, Hesston plays at Clay Center and Cheney plays at Wichita Collegiate.
In Class 4A, Great Bend and McPherson are ranked third and fifth. Shawnee Bishop Miege and Overland Park-St. Thomas Aquinas are first and second and Louisburg is fourth. On Friday night, Great Bend hosts Liberal and McPherson plays at Mulvane.
In Class 5A, Wichita Kapaun-Mount Carmel is first, followed by Lenexa-St. James Academy, Hays High, Wichita Bishop Carroll and Spring Hill. On Friday, Hays High hosts Dodge City and Kapaun hosts Bishop Caroll.
Mill Valley leads Class 6A, followed by Derby, Manhattan, Gardner-Edgerton and Maize. On Friday, Derby hosts Valley Center and Maize hosts Haysville-Campus.
