Hutchinson Trinity Baseball Loses Heartbreaker to Stanton County in Class 2-1A Regional

The season came to a heartbreaking end for the Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School Celtics baseball team Tuesday afternoon with a 9-8 loss to Stanton County in the first round of the Class 2-1A West Regional 4 Region 2 baseball semifinals at Spearville.

Hutchinson Trinity finished the season with an 18-4 record.

The Trojans were the first to get on the board in the first inning on Gerardo Robles’ two-run single. Stanton County added one run in the second on an RBI double by David Crane.

In the bottom of the second inning, Trinity’s Kaid McElgunn doubled down the right field line to tie the game at 3-3. The Celtics fought back after falling behind by four runs in the fifth inning.

Trinity’s Sam Vogel belted a home run to right field tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Stanton County broke up the tie with a run in the top of the eighth inning.

Ian Floyd earned the win for the Trojans. He allowed two hits and four runs (three earned) over three innings. Floyd struck out four and walked four.

Vogel took the loss for the Celtics. He pitched three innings, surrendered six runs (five earned) on six hits, struck out two and walked two.

Trinity’s Drew Dechant pitched five innings in relief for the Celtics. He allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) while, struck out 12 and walked none.

Dechant and Vogel each collected two hits for the Celtics. McElgunn and Vogel each drove in two runs for Trinity. Gage Schroeder drew two walks. Trinity walked six times and stole 11 bases. Beau Towell, Dechant, McElgunn, and Vogel each stole multiple bases.

Stanton County picked up 12 hits. Crane went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and had two of Stanton County’s six stolen bases.

On defense, Stanton County turned one double play.
