Bullpup Sports Roundup Sep. 6-15 – Updates from Girls Golf, Boys Soccer, and Cross Country

Tuesday, September 10

Girls Golf at Salina – 3rd Place

The Bullpups continued their season at the Salina Central Girl’s Invitational finishing 3rd out of 11 schools and setting a school record with a score of 346.

All Bullpups who played finished in the top 50 out of a total of 65 players. Andi Buschbom shot a team-best 77 to finish 5th in the event. Brodie Kuhn had a tough start on the course, but bounced back to shoot a 79, which tied for 8th. Reese Elliot also finished in the top 20 with a 16th place finish with a score of 87.

Hattie Gipson finished in 30th with a score of 103, Addie French ended tied for 38th after shooting 110, and Pere Bauer rounded out the Bullpups tied for 50th with a score of 117. Gipson’s and French’s scores were personal bests.

 

Boys Soccer vs. Maize South – L 8-0

After winning their opening match the week prior against Circle, the Bullpups headed down to Maize South High School for an early season tournament, starting off in the first round against Maize South.

The Bullpups finished with their first loss of the season 8-0. Maize South’s defense held the Pups in check with just three shots-on-goal, while having 11 of their own and scoring on 8 of them. The loss moved McPherson to 1-1 on the season.


Thursday, September 12

Girls Golf at Winfield – 1st Place

After their 3rd place finish in the Salina Central Invite, the girl’s golf team followed it up at the Winfield Invitational with a win against four other schools, scoring 371. The team finished just two strokes better than Bishop Carroll, who McPherson trailed by just six shots for the second-place spot in Tuesday’s Salina Invitational.

The Bullpups took the top two individual scores, with Brodie Kuhn finishing in first with 79 and Andi Buschbom in 2nd with 82. Reese Elliot finished 13th, Hattie Gibson ended in 18th, Pera Bauer was 25th, and Addison Shaft finished in 29th.

Head coach Treg Fawl called the Winfield tournament the most difficult course they will play all year. “I was proud of the way all of our ladies battled throughout the day,” Fawl said. “It will make us better for the postseason.”

The team will have a home invitational for their next meet Thursday, Sep. 19.

 

Boys Soccer vs. Wichita East – L 4-0

Following their loss to Maize South, the Pups trekked on to face Wichita East to continue the Maize South Tournament, but fell for the second game in a row 4-0.

Head coach Chris Adrian said the Bullpups improved defensively, but Wichita East battle back in the second half to get the shutout win. East only led 1-0 at halftime following a long-distance goal while scoring their final three in the second half.

The loss moved the Bullpups to 1-2.


Saturday, September 14

Cross Country at Wamego – Boys: 4th / Girls: 7th

The girls and boys XC teams went up against strong 4A competition Saturday with the boys finishing in 4th place and the girls in 7th.

Caleb Muehler led the boys team again with a time of 16:16, finishing in 2nd place individually. Ethan Elder medaled with a 9th place finish, Garrett Floyd medaled in 36th and Tripp Pelzel medaled in 37th.

The girls team finished in 7th, but their leading runner Lexi Patterson ran a 20:15, which broke the previous school record of 20:16. Patterson medaled in 8th while Eva Ramey finished as the team’s other medalist in 9th.

Cross Country will next head to Hutchinson for a meet Thursday, Sep. 19.

 

Boys Soccer vs. Wichita-Classical – W 3-1

After a tough go of things in the first two games of the Maize South Tournament, the Bullpups ended the tournament happy with a win over Wichita Classical 3-1.

McPherson scored early with a penalty kick scored by Manny Morales to lead 1-0 at halftime. Classical tied it up early in the second half with a penalty kick of their own, but McPherson scored 60 seconds later as Borin Heang finished after a great pass by Jackson Martin. Heang later scored his second goal of the match on a penalty kick.

“This was a really strong bounce-back performance,” head coach Chris Adrian said. “The last two games have been very challenging for the boys, but [Saturday] they showed what they are capable of.”

The win moves the team to 2-2 on the season. The team will have a busy week starting with a rematch against Wichita-Classical Monday, Sep. 16. Following that, they will head to El Dorado Tuesday, Sep. 17 before returning home Thursday, Sep. 19 to face Salina South.
