HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The McPherson High School Girls Swimming team began their postseason Friday, May 16 with the AVCTL meet, placing 3rd as a team but qualifying two relay teams for state and earning State Consideration times in two other events.
Head coach Abby Bradstreet was proud of the 3rd place finish, as they had to earn points without their co-op swimmers from Moundridge and Smoky Valley High Schools as well as entering without divers. Bradstreet says almost every athlete earned a new personal best or a season best time.
The Bullpups won three events and took the podium in three others. The team also had two new State Consideration times and two new State Qualification times. Adyson Wiens won the 50 Freestyle and placed 2nd in the 100 Butterfly. Bree Pickerell won the 500 Freestyle and placed 2nd in the 200 IM.
The State Qualifications came from the same relay team from two events, consisting of Wiens, Claire Schmidt, Gracy Hubbard, and Pickerell. The team won the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:52.18, but placed 3rd in the 400 Freestyle Relay in 4:11.63.
Hubbard earned a State Consideration time of 2:18.98 in the 200 Freestyle, despite placing 5th in the event. Ella Schrag didn’t place in the 50 Freestyle, but swam 27.66 seconds for a consideration time.
The team will head to the State Championships May 23-24 at the Capital Federal Natatorium in Topeka.
