For the 2026-27 school year, 28 Kansas high schools are officially fielding girls flag football teams.
Following a successful multi-year pilot program, the Kansas State High School Activities Association officially sanctioned the sport 61-1 in a vote on April 23.
The agenda for the KSHSAA Executive Board meetings Wednesday and Thursday includes flag football.
The KSHSAA Executive Board staff will facilitate a discussion regarding flag participation and postseason format. It is recommended the flag football postseason format be approved for the first championships to be conducted in October.
The inaugural season will allow the 28 schools to compete for the first-ever KSHSAA girls flag football state championship. Regular-season play will consist of 6 to 10 games.
The participating programs are predominantly spread across Johnson, Wyandotte and Sedgwick counties.
Notable teams from the Wichita area include Maize, Maize South and the seven public Wichita high schools (East, Heights, North, Northwest, South, Southeast and West).
The movement for girls flag football in Kansas started to heat up when the Kansas City Chiefs helped launch the Kansas High School Girls Flag Football League.
The 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics will include men’s and women’s flag football.
The tournament will be played July 15-22, 2028, at Exposition Park Stadium, located near the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
