At a special meeting Monday McPherson City Commissioners authorized submission of a Transportation Alternatives grant application for the 3rd phase of the Northview sidewalk extension that would also include a portion of North Maxwell.
Public Works Director Eric Duerksen said this would extend the 10′ sidewalk east along Northview Road from where it currently ends at Veranda to Maxwell Street, then south on Maxwell as a 5′ sidewalk to connect with an existing sidewalk at Darlow Drive on the northeast corner of The Cedars campus that extends south to 1st Street.
TA grant requirements were recently changed to allow five-foot-wide sidewalks in projects for consideration, Residents along Maxwell asked for a narrower walkway due to safety concerns for both users and residents backing out of homes. Also based on their input, the sidewalk will be mostly on existing right of way, though some temporary construction easements may be needed.
The project carries a just over $1.1 million price tag, with the city’s share nearly $252,000.
A special meeting of the Commission was required to adopt the resolution authorizing submission of the grant application because the application is due to the Kansas Department of Transportation Friday.
