Red Cross of South Central and Southeast Kansas partners with LOC to preserve veterans’ stories on June 8, 2026
WICHITA, Kan. – Kansas is a state with a long and proud military history. In recognition of the service and sacrifice of Kansas veterans, the Library of Congress Veterans History Project (VHP), in collaboration with the American Red Cross invites Wichita veterans to share their stories of service on June 8, at the Red Cross of South Central and Southeast Kansas, 707 N. Main, Wichita, Kansas 67203. Any US veteran is welcome to participate regardless of where they served or whether they saw combat.
A constituent services representative from the office of U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran will also be onsite throughout the day to help veterans with VA issues, casework, and other needs.
VHP is an archive at the Library of Congress that preserves narratives of veterans’ service through oral history interviews and documents such as photographs, letters, journals, and diaries created while in the military so that researchers and future generations can access these firsthand accounts and better understand the realities of war. VHP has over 119,000 veteran stories from World War I to the present, representing all aspects of military service. VHP collections are viewed by over 3 million researchers yearly and are used as sources for academic research as well as books, documentaries, and other creative works.
Veterans attending the event can sign up for a recorded oral history interview that will last from 30-60 minutes, or they can bring original documents to donate. Veterans and volunteers may sign up by calling or emailing Shannon Wedge at [email protected] or (316) 347-0719. Walk-in interview requests will be accepted, but due to anticipated demand cannot be guaranteed. These documents and interviews will become part of the permanent collections of the Library of Congress and will be made available to researchers and the general public via the American Folklife Center Reading Room and the Veterans History Project website at www.loc.gov/vets.
