HUTCHINSON, KS — In celebration of Arbor Day, the Kansas State Fair, in partnership with the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation, is proud to announce the launch of the Kansas State Fairgrounds Tree Beautification Project, a long-term initiative designed to restore and enhance the natural beauty of the Fairgrounds.

The program, known as the KSF Tree Beautification Project, includes two areas for participation; Trees for the Fair & Tradition Trees Program, and aims to reestablish the tree canopy across the Fairgrounds following significant losses in recent years. Severe weather, disease, insects, and drought have resulted in the removal of approximately 50 trees between 2024 and 2025.

“This initiative is about more than planting trees—it’s about preserving the experience of the Kansas State Fair for future generations,” said James Fisher, Executive Director, Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation “Trees provide shade, beauty, and a sense of place that is essential to the Fairgrounds.”

Immediate Need Identified
Kansas State Fair staff have identified priority planting areas for the first phase of the project, including:

  • KSF RV Park – 12 trees
  • Lake Talbott (East Side) – 2 trees
  • Meadowlark Building (West Side) – 2 trees

Note: One of the tree planting spots near Lake Talbott is reserved for a premium offering location and will be sold during the Live Auction of the Foundation’s Boots & Bling Fundraiser on August 1.

Following the initial planting phase, an estimated 10–15 trees will be planted annually to replace those lost or damaged over time.

Opportunities for Community Support
The Tree Beautification Project offers two ways for individuals, families, and businesses to participate:

  • Tradition Trees ($2,000): Includes planting and ongoing care of a tree, along with a permanent cast metal plaque at its base with a personalized inscription.
  • Trees for the Fair Fund (minimum $300): Supports ongoing maintenance and enhancement of trees, with donor recognition displayed on a Fairgrounds plaque.

Donations received by May 15, 2026, will be included in the 2026 planting cycle, with future annual deadlines aligning with Arbor Day.

Enduring Impact
“The Kansas State Fairgrounds are a place where more than 400,000 people gather each year, and trees play a critical role in that experience. They provide shade during hot days of summer and those unpredictable September days, enhance the beauty of our grounds, and make the Fair more comfortable and enjoyable for our guests. Replacing and expanding our tree canopy is an important investment in the future of the Fair.” — Bryan Schulz, General Manager, Kansas State Fair

The program is designed to create a more park-like, shaded, and welcoming environment for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who visit the Kansas State Fairgrounds each year and specifically for those who attend the Kansas State Fair. Donors have the opportunity to leave an enduring impact while contributing to the sustainability and beauty of one of Kansas’ most treasured gathering places.
